As you may already be aware, viewing a display at night can be bad for your eyes, which has an impact on your overall health. This is because the blue light from the screen throws off your circadian cycle and makes it difficult for you to drift off to sleep at night. Unfortunately, Chrome OS did not include a night mode until recently, unlike other popular operating systems like macOS and Windows. The Chrome OS Developer Channel has received a new version from Google that adds a native Night Light functionality. Note:I tested the procedure below on my Asus Chromebook Flip C100PA, and it performed just as I had hoped. Additionally, you must switch to the Developer build, which will powerwash your smartphone and delete all of your data. Before continuing, it is advised that you backup any crucial data on your device.
- The first step is to make sure that your device is on the Developer Channel. To do so, head over to Settings and click on the hamburger menu button to reveal the sidebar. Here, click on About Chrome OS .
- In the About Chrome OS section, click on Detailed build information . It will now show you on which channel your Chromebook is currently on. Click on Change Channel .
The owner user account is the only one with access to the aforementioned option. Log out and re-login using the owner account if you are currently in into a different account.
- A list of various channels will now show up, including Stable, Beta, and Developer. Select Developer unstable from the list, and click on Change Channel .
- Now that you ve done that, go back to the settings page. The system will now update your device to the developer channel. Once done, you ll be prompted to restart the device. Click on Restart to proceed.
Note: The channel will continue to be shown as Stable. Having said that, it will now read Version x.x.x.x (Official Build) dev once you restart your device.
- Upon restarting your device, open up Google Chrome and enter the following Chrome flag in the address bar:
chrome://flags/#ash-enable-night-light
There should be a screen with several Google flags shown. Click Enable under the headline “Enable Night Light.” After you’ve done that, your Chromebook might need to be restarted. Restart Now can be used to activate the changes.
- Now that you ve done that, head over to Settings -> Device -> Displays. Scroll down to the option of Night Light, and enable the toggle next to it.
- Alternatively, you can also set a schedule for the Night Light from Sunset to Sunrise or define your own Custom Schedule . Furthermore, you also have the option to modify the color temperature, by altering the overall warmth of the color.
