Unfortunately, WhatsApp’s much-desired document sharing feature for Android is now only available for exchanging PDF files. We may expect WhatsApp to add support for more file types in the near future, but if you can’t wait, there is a workaround. In actuality, WhatsApp already has code to accept documents like doc, txt, docx, pptx, and xls, but it hasn’t made it available in the app. If your device is rooted, you can go ahead and enable it.
So, here’s how to start transmitting any document on WhatsApp if you have a rooted Android phone:
1.To begin with, you’ll need a good file management tool with root access capabilities. If you already have one installed, that’s great. Otherwise, you may download one of the excellent file management apps for Android.
2. Next, go to data->data->com.whatsapp->shared prefsfolder in the File Manager.
Note: If your file manager doesn’t automatically display system files, try searching thedatafolder.
3. Use a text editor to view the com.whatsapp preferences.xml file in the shared prefs folder (most file managers include a text editor).
It will ask you to provide root permission to open the file if you have a Root Management programme like SuperSU installed. The file should open in a text editor when you selectGrant.
4. Look for the code “string name=documents >pdf” in the file; it should be at the bottom.
5. Just edit it to a document (pdf, doc, docx, xls, txt, or pptx) and save the file.
6. Next, force the app to stop by going to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
7. After everything is complete, open WhatsApp and try sending any document. You will notice that in addition to PDF files, other document file types are also available to send.
Although these procedures add functionality for sharing various documents, ZIP, APK, and other types of files are still not supported. Let’s hope the upcoming upgrade to WhatsApp adds support for sharing these file types.
