Which Minecraft Update Adds Frogs to the Game?
Frogs have been officially added to the game by Mojang with the release of the 1.19 Wild Update. Along with the Warden and Allay, the developers began testing this new mob in the Java snapshots and Minecraft Preview (more on this below) back in March. In the Xbox, Windows, and Android beta versions of Minecraft 1.18.10.24, frogs were initially introduced.
Frogs are now formally accessible on all platforms in the Minecraft Java and Bedrock edition thanks to the stable release of the 1.19 update on June 7.
What Do the Frogs Do in Minecraft?
Frogs in the game Minecraft are recreations of actual frogs, as their name implies. However, there are only three different types of frogs in Minecraft, and they are all adorable. All of these virtual frogs can jump a height of three blocks, which is equal to the height of our main character. Additionally, they suffer little to no fall damage with or without jumps, unlike any other non-flying monster.
They croak and occasionally puff up their vocal or neck sacs, which is how they behave. Frogs enjoy sitting on lily pads, hopping around, and ribbiting, according to Mojang. Frogs walk around using all four of their legs in a different way when they are not jumping. As for their food, Minecraft frogs only eat small slimes and small magma cubes.
What Do Frogs Eat in Minecraft?
In Minecraft 1.19, the frogs eat the following:
- Small Magma Cubes
- Small Slimes
- Slimeballs
The frogs can feed on the first two mobs on their own. But the players have to feed slimeballs by hand to the frogs. If you are wondering, you can easilyget slimeballs by killing the small slimes. Alternatively, the baby pandas also have a mechanic to drop slime balls on sneezing. But that s a rare occurrence so we won t suggest you go on that route.
Instead, you should stick with finding and killing slimes to feed your frogs. The slimes usually spawn in the swamps and mangrove swamps. They have a higher spawn rate during the nighttime. Not to forget, the small slimes also drop slimeballs when they get eaten by a frog.
In the earlier beta versions of Minecraft 1.19, frogs could eat fireflies and, as a joke, even goats, but that s no longer the case.
Fireflies were removed and are no longer part of the Minecraft 1.19 update. You can read Mojang s official statement in the linked article. Now, the frogscan only attack and eat small slimesand magma cubes using their long tongues. Getting eaten by a frog makes the small slime mobs despawn immediately, but not without a drop.
Where to Find Frogs in Minecraft?
If a frog eats a small slime, it drops slimeballs that can later be fed to the frogs. However, more interestingly, on eating a magma cube, the frogs drop afroglight. It is a light block with the same color as the frog that dropped it. The player can then pick that block up to use it for decorative purposes. There is no recipe in the game that involves froglights yet.
Breed Frogs in Minecraft to Get Tadpoles
The frogs commonly spawn near water sources inMinecraft sswamp andmangrove swamp biomesin groups of up to five. Beyond the swamps, frogs can also grow in a variety of other biomes, but Mojang has not issued a confirmed list of such biomes just yet. Other than natural spawning, you can also get frogs by growing or breeding them using tadpoles.
Similar to how webreed villagers in Minecraft, you can also breed frogs by feeding them their favorite food. So, you simply need to get two frogs close to each other and feed them slimeballs to make them enter their breeding mode. Hearts will pop out from their head, indicating the beginning of the breeding stage.
Frog Eggs or Frog Spawn
Then, one of the frogs will go near a water source to lay eggs. Minecraft doesn t follow the concept of the binary sexes of males and females. So, the frog that lays eggs is chosen at random. Butevery frog lays eggs only in water bodies. There is no minimum or maximum size for waterbodies, but an area of 3 x 3 blocks should be enough.
The technical name of the eggs that the frog lays isfrog spawn. These are non-solid blocks that float on top of water source blocks. If a player is in survival mode, there is no way to obtain a frog spawn. They immediately break and despawn if a tool is used on them, even with thesilk touch enchantment. Though, touching or jumping on top of the eggs in-game causes no harm.
Tadpoles
Once laid, these eggs or frogs spawntadpoles after 5 10 minutes. A group of frogs spawn can release up to 6 tadpoles at once. Their animations and survival pattern is similar to fishes in Minecraft. With that said, let s learn how the tadpoles work in Minecraft to spawn frogs in-game.
As you already know, tadpoles are the baby version of frogs in real life as well as Minecraft. They have very limited health, and most mobs can kill the tadpoles with a single hit. Fortunately, their only enemy in water bodies is axolotls. And, theycan t survive outside waterfor more than a few seconds, even with full health.
Three Frog Variants Found in Minecraft
Though, unlike eggs, a player cancarry and move the tadpoles to another location using a water bucket. As for their growth, the tadpoles generally take less time than the hatching process to grow into frogs. Though, you canfeed them slimeballsto make them grow even faster. As for the kind of frog they will turn into comes down to the biome they are growing up in.
- Temperate Frogs
- Cold Frogs
- Warm Frogs
Minecraft is currently testing three types of frogs, depending on the biome it lives in. And the three variants of frogs include (via Minecraft Wiki):
Temperate frogs are orangein color and can be found in somewhat neutral temperature biomes like the swamp biome. On the other hand, cold frogs are green in colorand only found in lower temperature snowy biomes and the End dimension. Lastly, warm frogs are grey, and you can only find them in hot biomes, including the nether dimension.
