    What is the Microsoft Pluton Processor?

    Microsoft created the Pluton security processor in association with the illustrious chipmakers AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm.

    Pluton, which was initially created for Xbox and Azure Sphere, is now available for Windows PCs. Microsoft first introduced Pluton for Windows PCs in November 2020, and during CES 2022, more information about its availability was disclosed. With the help of this CPU, Windows PCs will soon receive fast upgrades and improved security.

    How Does Microsoft Pluton Work?

    Pluton can be set up to function as the Trusted Platform Module, as a security processor for non-TPM applications like platform resiliency, or OEMs can opt to disable Pluton, according to Microsoft.

    Pluton is integrated into the CPU to help thwart attacks and the theft of credentials and encryption keys, unlike a separate trusted platform module that communicates with the CPU. The bus interface between the CPU and security processor can no longer be used as a point of attack, including those carried out while in physical control of the device. According to Microsoft, this approach helps to ensure that new attack methods cannot access sensitive information.

    According to David Weston, Director of Enterprise and OS Security at Microsoft, this ground-breaking security processor design will make it much more difficult for attackers to conceal themselves within the operating system, improve our defences against physical attacks, stop the theft of credentials and encryption keys, and allow us to recover from software bugs.

    • Security Updates from the Cloud

    Microsoft claims that even if an attacker had malware installed or physical access to a PC running Pluton, they will not be able to access important information such as passwords, user identities, encryption keys, and personal information. Additionally, Secure Hardware Cryptography Key (SHACK) technology is utilised by this new security processor to successfully isolate keys from Pluton’s firmware.

    Microsoft Pluton vs TPM: How Do They Differ?

    Effective firmware updates are another advantage of the Pluton processor thanks to Windows Update integration. By using this strategy, Microsoft can update firmware for users directly without having to rely on its OEM partners. This should make it easier for the business to widely deploy crucial security patches to fix problems.

    TPM is normally a distinct hardware chip that is in charge of safeguarding sensitive information on Windows PCs, as you might remember from our TPM explainer. Pluton differs significantly from a standard TPM module in that it is integrated inside the CPU. So, with Pluton-powered devices, you receive the same hardware-level TPM functionalities. As we already indicated, this strategy will lessen the likelihood of violent assaults.

    Will Pluton End Piracy on Windows PCs?

    Pluton is functional and compatible with the TPM specifications and APIs that are already in use. As a result, on Windows PCs with the Pluton chip, you can use TPM-powered features like BitLocker and System Guard. In a nutshell, Pluton is essentially TPM’s successor. It integrates TPM features, improves update support, and renders PCs resistant to physical assaults. Additionally, it is thought to be superior to firmware TPMs like AMD’s fTPM and Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT).

    Users have been worried about the potential DRM limitations Pluton could bring since since Microsoft first announced it in November 2020. The reason for this is that Pluton makes it more difficult to pirate games on Xbox platforms. Microsoft claims that its major objective with Pluton for PCs is to assure security, although the potential to impose DRM is also a possibility.

    Microsoft Pluton: When Will Devices with this Chip Launch?

    Microsoft has stated that OEMs will have the option to deactivate Pluton, notwithstanding this. Therefore, it will be interesting to observe whether OEMs decide to disable Pluton in consumer PCs or just configure it to replace the TPM in Windows 11 PCs to activate the various security features. Given the security advantages, OEMs are unlikely to entirely delete Pluton, and it’s not obvious whether a consumer could disable Pluton manually.

    Microsoft said at CES 2022 that Lenovo is the first PC manufacturer to introduce PCs powered by Pluton. The first laptops that use AMD’s Ryzen 6000 series CPUs are the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 and Z16. Despite this, the Pluton chip will be present in all Ryzen 6000 series processors. Over 200 new laptops from OEM partners like Dell, Razer, HP, and others will be released in the upcoming weeks, according to the chipmaker. As a result, a wave of Windows 11 laptops featuring the Pluton security chip is imminent.

    Microsoft Pluton Security Chip Explained

    A month ahead of AMD, Qualcomm also made the news that Pluton would be used in its Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 CPUs. When products using this Qualcomm technology will hit the market, though, is unknown. AMD will undoubtedly surpass the maker of mobile chips. We will have to wait before seeing Intel chips with Microsoft Pluton, but Intel is also on board and will support it.
