WhatsApp Banned over 20 Lakhs User Accounts in India in October

WhatsApp has now deactivated more than 2 million accounts in India for breaking both Indian and WhatsApp standards, following the deactivation of over 3 million accounts in September of this year. In accordance with India’s IT Rule, 2021, the Meta-owned company just issued its monthly User Safety Report. It discloses WhatsApp was the target of 500 complaints from consumers in India, and 20,69,000 accounts were shut down.

To comply with India’s IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, WhatsApp began providing monthly User Safety Reports earlier this year. In the report, WhatsApp provides specifics on the number of user complaints it receives and the number of accounts it bans in India over a specific time frame.

According to the most current report for the month of October, WhatsApp received 500 user complaints, of which 146 were about account support, 248 were about appeals of bans, 11 were about safety, 53 were about product support, and 11 were about miscellaneous support issues. 18 of the complaint reports were really prohibited, despite the fact that the corporation dismissed the majority of them.

In addition, WhatsApp states that its automatic system, which is run by a team of experts, has been used to block over 2 million (20 lakh) accounts in India.

The automated technologies for abuse identification are active at three points in the account life cycle: during chat, upon registration, and whenever the platform receives any unfavourable comments from other users about an account. Additionally, the algorithm recognises other irregularities of an account, such as whether it is being used with a modified version of WhatsApp or not, which may result in a ban.

Are you one of the 20,69,000 Indian WhatsApp users whose accounts were blocked in October? You’ll be glad to know that soon you will be able to request an account ban review directly from WhatsApp if you are and your WhatsApp account is now prohibited. Although the feature has not yet been made available to the general public, we anticipate it will do so very soon. Send an email to wa@support.whatsapp.com to request an account-ban review for the time being.
