End-to-end encryption is the main privacy and security-related feature that WhatsApp has included in an effort to seem as a secure platform. With a similar outlook, the Meta-owned messaging app has just unveiled a brand-new browser plugin called Code Verify to bolster its web version’s security and guarantee that users are accessing the genuine WhatsApp Web edition. Here is all the information you require regarding WhatsApp’s new Code Verify plugin.
Code Verify Extension for WhatsApp Web Introduced
Open-source addon called Code Verify was created in collaboration with Cloudflare. It checks the WhatsApp Web code automatically to make sure it hasn’t been tampered with or altered, protecting you from malicious WhatsApp Web versions that might compromise your privacy. It can be used for the same purpose by any other third-party platform because it is open-source.
But how does this function? Code Verify employs the idea of subresource integrity to determine whether the sources being fetched haven’t been changed, according to meta. The original JavaScript code for the WhatsApp Web has been given to Cloudflare. The code of the specific WhatsApp Web version you are using is compared to the original one when someone uses the Code Verify extension. The extension will alert users if there is a discrepancy.
Additionally disclosed is the fact that Code Verify guarantees user privacy while doing so and avoids attempting to access any data, metadata, user data, or even WhatsApp messages.
How to Use Code Verify?
It is possible to utilise the Code Verify browser extension with Chrome, Firefox (coming soon), and Microsoft Edge. When a user signs into the messaging app on a desktop after downloading the extension from the Google, Microsoft, or Mozilla web extension stores, it will immediately check the code of WhatsApp Web.
The Green light mode indicates that the code has been successfully validated and everything is in order. The extension has three more modes as well. Then, you have the “Orange Light” mode to indicate that a problem has been found and can be resolved with a refresh. Finally, the Red light mode is used if the validation is unsuccessful. If a validation attempt fails, users can hit the Learn More option on the extension UI.
Sadly, when I tested the extension, my validation was unsuccessful. WhatsApp has outlined a few methods you can take to resolve this if it occurs to you. If your validation failed, please let us know what outcome you are seeing and whether your problem has been resolved. Comment below with your opinions on the new expansion as well!
